Artist’s Biography

After graduating from the Maryland Institute of Art with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Photography, I went into advertising for GQ magazine, worked for Blakeslee Lane Photo Studio, and freelanced in art and photography. However, because of my scouting experiences and love of children, my calling was to teach. Therefore, I went back to school and earned a Master’s Degree in Art Education with postgraduate work in Diagnostic Prescriptive Teaching. At Hillcrest Psychiatric Clinic, Washington, DC, I was trained in Art Therapy and later hired by Good Shepherd Center, Baltimore, MD, to teach severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed adolescent girls. In my ability to transfer an understanding and appreciation of art through nature, students learned to paint and to express their creativity, which in turn helped them cope with their inner turmoil. My students succeeded on all levels, winning state, national, and international prizes in painting, photography and sculpture. I have received many awards but none are as endearing as seeing my students prosper in society. On a personal level, I have exhibited and sold paintings in the Maryland and Washington, DC area. My art has been accepted in fund raising events for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and I have taught painting at conferences and workshops for the Maryland Department of Recreation, Department of Social Work and the University of Maryland. In addition, I have written informative articles on how to paint on different surfaces for Learning Magazine and Art Activities Magazine.

At this point in my life, I am committing myself to work as an artist.
